This is the unplugged demo for "Down By the Water's Edge" a song that I'll be recording with some of the greatest GA-based artists in music...John Berry, T. Graham Brown, Nathan Sheppard, Wayne Baird and the members of Bluebilly Grit. The final version will be recorded and produced by studio owner, engineer and pianist extraordinaire Lee Davis.
This version was not :).
FYI, this demo was laid down in The Junk Room using a Shure 57 and 58, my Fostex MK8HD and a little condenser mic modelling. A touch of reverb and stereo enhancing, slight EQ and some limiting and here you go. Sounds like a lot, but I'm very untechnical...basically, I sat down with my guitar, hit record and started singing. A little harmony vocal for depth, but other than that, this was a one-take cut.

Lyrics

Down By the Water’s Edge
Words & Music by Ricky Fitzpatrick

Verse One
In the North Oconee River, Summertime,
1982,
Thirteen and cut-off jeans and an inner tube.

I walked out in the tumbling water,
Knee-deep in GA pines.
That’s a memory in me that’ll never die.

Pre-Chorus
Good Lord, I swear I can hear my mama call,
Way on downstream, by the waterfall…

Chorus
And it feels like home,
Way on down by the water’s edge.
Let the river carry me away.
And I find myself,
Ev’ry time I think about
All my sweetest memories…
Calling me…
Down…by the water’s edge.

Verse Two
In the Springtime air, on the river bank,
Young love in the maple leaves.
It was true as the good news…and we believed.

In the midnight moonlight, we made plans,
Held hands and made a wish.
It was right and later that night, I stole a kiss.

Pre-Chorus
True love was like a dream and it was real.
I asked her to marry me, down by the waterwheel.

Chorus
And it feels like home,
Way on down by the water’s edge.
Let the river carry me away.
And I find myself,
Ev’ry time I think about
All my sweetest memories…
Calling me…
Down…by the water’s edge.

Verse Three
In the North Oconee River, Sunday morning,
Another year - another time.
The whole church was gathered down by the waterside.

We sang a song and said a prayer,
Looking at my baby girl,
Just about to step out into a whole new world.

Pre-Chorus
Heaven knows I see it all just like yesterday.
She waded in and all her sins just washed away…

Chorus
And it feels like home,
Way on down by the water’s edge.
Let the river carry me away.
And I find myself,
Ev’ry time I think about
All my sweetest memories…
Calling me…
Down…by the water’s edge.
